My 8th Half-Marathon: Proving Mental Toughness at the PUMA Philippine Half-Series 2026
There is an unwritten rule in long-distance running: Respect the distance, or the distance will humble you.
Heading into the PUMA Philippine Half-Series 2026, I knew I was toeing a very fine line. I was stepping up to the starting line for my 8th official half-marathon, but my preparation was far from ideal. I was battling a lingering injury, running on minimal training, and threw my usual pace strategy completely out the window.
Yet, when the final shutter clicked at the finish line, my watch read 2:33:13. It wasn't my fastest 21K, but it easily stands as one of the proudest finishes of my running journey.
The Reality of Race Morning: No Pace, Just Grit
Normally, race prep involves calculating split charts, dialing in target paces, and meticulously planning fueling stops. This time around, the goal was simple: listen to my body, manage the discomfort, and keep moving forward.
When physical conditioning is compromised by injury and a lack of mileage, the race shifts entirely from a physical test to a psychological one.
Navigating the 21K Grind
The PUMA Philippine Half-Series delivered an incredible race atmosphere—the energy at the starting line was electric, surrounded by thousands of passionate runners. But once the initial adrenaline wore off around Kilometer 7, the real work began.
Managing the Injury: Without a set pace band to follow, every kilometer was an exercise in body awareness. I had to stay smooth, avoid sudden surges, and keep my stride as light as possible to cushion the impact.
The Mental Crossroad (KM 12–16): This is the segment where an untrained body starts asking hard questions. When your muscles tighten up and fatigue sets in early, self-doubt creeps in. I had to mentally chunk the race down—focusing only on reaching the next hydration station rather than the distant finish line.
The Final Stretch (KM 17–21): Pure stubbornness took over for the last 4 kilometers. Seeing the race chute come into view gave me that final surge to cross the line strong in 2:33:13.
What Half-Marathon #8 Taught Me
Running half-marathons when you are fully trained and firing on all cylinders is empowering. But completing one when everything is stacked against you teaches you what you are truly made of.
Mindset Over Muscle: Your body will want to quit long before your mind actually has to. Mental fortitude is a muscle, and races like this build it faster than any workout.
Adapting on the Fly: Being flexible enough to discard a target time and run purely on feel is essential for long-term athletic longevity.
Respecting Recovery: Crossing the finish line is a victory, but it is also a loud reminder to give the body the rest, rehabilitation, and structured training block it deserves before the next starting line.
Number 8 is officially in the record books! Time to focus on proper recovery, heal up the injury, and prepare for the next challenge.
