Pushing Past Limits: A Pre-Birthday Personal Record at the Rexona 10 Miler Series Davao

There is no better way to kick off a birthday week than by stepping up to a starting line, testing your endurance, and coming away with a outcome you didn't even know you had in you. On April 19, under the humid early-morning skies of the Rexona 10 Miler Series – Davao Leg, I celebrated another year of life the best way I know how logging hard miles on the road and setting a brand-new Personal Record (PR).

Crossing that finish line at 1:43:07 holding a steady average pace of 6’28"/km over 16 kilometers was easily my best run yet. To cap it off, finishing 107th out of 504 overall runners made the milestone feel like the ultimate birthday gift to myself.

The Pre-Birthday Drive: Running with Purpose

Running on or right before your birthday adds a layer of motivation that standard weekend races don't quite match. It turns every kilometer into a reflection on health, consistency, and how far you've come over the past year.

Going into the Rexona 10 Miler, the goal was simple, execute a clean, controlled race and enjoy the Davao road atmosphere. The 10-mile distance (16 kilometers) sits in that sweet spot where you can't just sprint out blindly, but you also can't coast, it requires a sharp balance of endurance and tempo.

Strategy Behind the 6'28"/km Pace

Holding a 6'28"/km clip across 16 kilometers doesn't happen by accident, especially on a warm Davao morning. Three specific elements made this breakthrough possible:

1. Disciplined Early Pacing

The temptation to run hot out of the start arch is real, especially with the energy of hundreds of Davao runners surrounding you. Staying patient through the first 3 kilometers preserved crucial muscle glycogen, leaving plenty in the tank for the middle miles.

2. Micro-Goals at Every Water Station

Instead of looking at the full 16 km as one giant mountain, breaking the race down station to station kept my focus sharp. Hydrating consistently and taking brief sips at every aid stop kept cramping at bay and kept core body temperature manageable.

3. Digging Deep in the Final 3 Kilometers

The last 3 kilometers are where a PR is either earned or lost. When physical fatigue started creeping in around Kilometer 13, the mental shift turned toward the pre-birthday celebration waiting at the finish. Pushing through those final road stretches allowed for a strong finish across the timer mat.

A Milestone to Build On

Finishing in the top 25% of the overall field was a powerful reminder of what consistent training brings. Beyond the official numbers, the Rexona 10 Miler Davao Leg was a celebration of movement, discipline, and starting another personal year on the strongest foot possible.

Here's to another year of setting targets, lacing up early, and chasing down the next finish line!
